PAN Card Photo & Signature Resizer

PAN applications run on two portals with two different size rules — and using the wrong one is the most common reason uploads get rejected. Protean (NSDL): photo 197 × 276 px, max 50 KB; signature 354 × 157 px, max 50 KB. UTIITSL: photo 213 × 213 px, max 30 KB; signature 400 × 200 px, max 60 KB. All four presets are built into the tool below — it opens on Protean; switch presets if you are applying on UTIITSL. Free, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

Two portals, two different size rules

India's PAN card applications are handled by two authorised portals, and they do not ask for the same uploads. Protean (the portal previously known as NSDL e-Gov) publishes a photograph of 197 × 276 pixels, up to 50 KB and a signature of 354 × 157 pixels, up to 50 KB. UTIITSL publishes a photograph of 213 × 213 pixels, up to 30 KB and a signature of 400 × 200 pixels, up to 60 KB. A file made for one portal is the wrong size for the other — that single mix-up accounts for a large share of PAN upload rejections.

One honest caution: third-party guides do not all quote the same caps — a few list the Protean photo cap as 20 KB rather than 50 KB, and some describe the UTIITSL signature as 354 × 157. Portals also revise their upload screens from time to time. The presets above follow the figures each portal most commonly publishes; if the upload screen in front of you states something different, your screen wins — use the Custom size option in the tool and enter exactly what it asks for.

The tool opens on the Protean photo preset, and the Signature tab opens on the matching Protean signature. If you are applying through UTIITSL, pick the UTIITSL preset in each tab instead. Your result panel shows the finished file's exact pixels and bytes, so you can compare it against your portal's requirement before you upload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the photo and signature size for a PAN card application?

It depends on the portal. Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov): photograph 197 × 276 pixels, up to 50 KB; signature 354 × 157 pixels, up to 50 KB. UTIITSL: photograph 213 × 213 pixels, up to 30 KB; signature 400 × 200 pixels, up to 60 KB. All four presets are built into the tool on this page. Published guides occasionally quote different caps (a few say 20 KB for the Protean photo), so if your form shows a different limit, use the Custom size option and enter exactly what your form asks for.

How do I know whether I am on Protean or UTIITSL?

Look at the website address of your application. Protean's PAN services run on protean-tinpan / onlineservices.nsdl.com domains (the portal was earlier called NSDL e-Gov). UTIITSL's run on utiitsl.com / pan.utiitsl.com. Your acknowledgement or the agent/CSC who took your application can also tell you. When in doubt, the upload screen itself shows the accepted size — match it with the Custom option if it differs from the presets.

My photo is being rejected as too large or wrong dimensions. What should I check?

Three things, in order: (1) you picked the preset for the portal you are actually applying on — the two portals' sizes are different and not interchangeable; (2) the file is a JPG (this tool always outputs JPG); (3) you uploaded the photo file to the photo field and the signature file to the signature field — an easy mix-up, since both are small JPGs. The result panel on this page shows the exact pixels and bytes of the file you downloaded, so you can compare it line-by-line with what the portal asks for.

Can I use this for a PAN correction / reprint application too?

Yes. Changes/correction and reprint applications on both portals ask for the same photograph and signature uploads at the same sizes. Prepare them with the same presets — but if you are updating your photo or signature on the PAN record itself, make sure the new image is clear and current, because it becomes part of your permanent record.

Is my photo uploaded to your server?

No. The resizing happens inside your browser on your own device. Your photo and signature are never sent anywhere, never stored and never seen by anyone — the sensible way to handle identity documents.
